Robert J. Behrens, M.D.

Dr. Behrens was born in Carroll, Iowa to a farm family on November 1, 1969.

 


 

EducationDr. Behrens received a B.S. degree with distinction in Chemistry from Iowa State University in 1992 . His M.D. degree was awarded by the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1997. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University / Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 2000. Dr. Behrens completed a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2003 in Bethesda, Maryland. He specialized in immuno-therapy of cancer and was protocol chairman of a national breast cancer vaccine trial. Dr. Behrens has been extensively involved in colon, pancreas, and ovarian vaccine trials.


Certification: Dr. Behrens is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and Hematology.


PracticeDr. Behrens joined Medical Oncology and Hematology Associates in August 2003.


Honors
  • Elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
  • Sebelin Award at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
  • Merit Award from the American Society of Clinic Oncology for a poster presentations at the annual national meeting on cancer vaccines 2002, 2003 .
  • First place in the American College of Physicians medical student clinical vignette competition at the University of Iowa 1996.
  • American Chemical Society Analytical Award 1991.
  • CRC Press Academic Achievement Award 1989.


PublicationsDr. Behrens has published six papers in medical literature that have dealt with prostate cancer, oncology emergencies, and blood disorders.


Hobbies and Interests Dr. Behrens and his wife live with their son and daughter in West Des Moines.
